Which vinyl floor suits your project?
Start with the room schedule, then match the material to traffic, cleaning and detailing. Sheet vinyl is supplied in rolls; LVT is supplied as tiles or planks. The format affects joint layout and the finished appearance, but the product specification determines whether a floor is suitable for the intended use.
Where a project needs a welded sheet floor, identify an appropriate sheet product and its approved jointing method. Where the priority is a wood- or stone-look interior, compare LVT with the specified wear surface and installation method. A colour sample alone cannot establish suitability for wet use, wheeled equipment, acoustic targets or static control.

A layered construction with decorative options. Compare the wear layer and backing as well as the overall thickness; different products can have different performance and installation requirements.
Luxury vinyl tile and plank

Safety vinyl
For a wet-risk or slip-sensitive area, specify the actual use conditions, footwear and contaminants before selecting a tested product. A general vinyl description does not establish wet-area suitability.
Acoustic vinyl
Ask for the selected product’s impact-sound data and check it against the project requirement. Confirm compatibility with furniture and rolling loads rather than assuming a cushioned floor suits every area.
Static-control vinyl
ESD flooring needs a defined electrical requirement, compatible installation system and agreed acceptance tests. “Antistatic” and a specified electrical-resistance classification describe different checks; confirm both with the selected product documents.
For a BOQ that names luxury vinyl sheet, loose-lay flooring, interwoven vinyl, semi-flexible tiles or a proprietary system, include the manufacturer and exact reference in your inquiry. Product availability and suitability need confirmation before procurement.
Sports vinyl, rubber flooring and vinyl wall or ceiling cladding need their own use-specific review. Explore sports flooring systems when the project includes activity rooms, gym areas or indoor courts.
Specify by room, not only by building type
Hospitals, clinics and laboratories
Record the room’s clinical use, wheeled traffic, cleaning products and wall-to-floor details. Corridors, patient areas and specialist rooms can need different specifications. Infection-control, clean-room or electrical requirements must be checked for the exact zone; a generic “medical vinyl” label is not an approval.
Schools, universities and nurseries
Separate classrooms, corridors, libraries and activity areas in the schedule. Compare maintenance access, furniture movement and any acoustic requirements, and coordinate installation with the available closure period.
Offices, retail and hospitality
Balance appearance with chair castors, display fixtures, cleaning and daily access. Identify entrances, service corridors, staff rooms and guest-facing areas so different needs are not hidden within one floor-finish item.
Sports and multipurpose rooms
Identify the activity, equipment and required performance before choosing sports vinyl or rubber. The floor for a weights area, theatre, indoor court or multipurpose room should be reviewed against that space’s own specification.
Check the subfloor before fixing the finish
A vinyl quotation should explain what will happen beneath the visible flooring. Before installation, establish these points with the flooring and preparation-product suppliers:
- Substrate condition: identify the base, existing finish, soundness, surface contamination and areas needing repair
- Moisture: agree the test method and the acceptance limits for the selected floor, adhesive and preparation system; do not use one generic limit for every product
- Flatness and smoothness: identify local defects and whether a compatible smoothing compound is required
- Cracks and joints: establish the cause and required treatment; moving joints need an appropriate detail
- Site conditions: confirm enclosure, temperature control, material storage and the manufacturer’s conditioning requirements
For a renovation, assess the existing layers before deciding whether they can remain. Manufacturer restrictions, bonding, moisture and height at adjoining finishes all matter. Unknown old flooring or adhesive may need a competent hazardous-material assessment before disturbance.
Cementitious self-levelling and subfloor preparation can be reviewed as a separate part of the scope. A smoothing layer should not be assumed to solve an underlying moisture problem.
Define the installation and handover scope
The following sequence is a project-planning checklist. The approved product instructions and site method statement govern the work.

Review the rooms and specification
Confirm measured areas, use, traffic, floor heights, cleaning and any consultant requirements. Separate supply-only items from preparation, installation and associated work.

Agree preparation and readiness
Record substrate findings and the required repairs, smoothing or moisture-management measures. Establish the conditions that must be met before floor laying starts.

Approve the layout and junctions
Set out roll or tile direction, joint positions, colour changes, thresholds and skirting. Coordinate coves, wall cladding, door clearances and any drains where the specified system permits them.

Install to the selected system
Use the specified preparation materials, adhesive, floor covering and jointing method. Heat welding, cold welding and unwelded joints are not interchangeable choices across all products.

Inspect, protect and hand over
Agree the inspection points, protection from following trades and the product-specific time before use or cleaning. Include the maintenance instructions and any specified test records in the handover.
For Saudi projects, confirm practical site arrangements early: working air conditioning where required, protected material storage, access permits, occupied-area segregation and a realistic programme for the preparation system. Quotation and installation dates depend on the agreed scope and site readiness.
When another system may be more suitable
Discuss alternatives where the floor will face heavy industrial loads, hot washdown, grease, aggressive chemicals or exposure outside the intended indoor use of the product. These conditions need a system-specific review, rather than assuming every vinyl floor is suitable.
Where relevant, compare polyurethane and PU-cement flooring systems against the actual exposure. A floor finish and its joints also should not be assumed to replace the building’s required waterproofing design.

What affects a vinyl flooring quotation?
A price per square metre is useful only when the included work is clear. Ask for the finish and the supporting work to be itemised so competing quotations cover the same requirements.
Material and layout
Exact product, colour, format, quantity, layout and cutting allowance; any samples or project-specific documentation required.
Preparation and removal
Existing-floor removal, disposal, repairs, smoothing, moisture assessment and any separately specified treatment.
Installation details
Adhesive, joint treatment, coved or separate skirting, corners, trims, thresholds and wall-cladding interfaces.
Project arrangements
City, delivery access, floor level, work phases, occupied spaces, protection and the required completion window.
Confirm the product reference, quantity, current availability, delivery arrangements and warranty terms in the proposal. This page does not set a universal price or completion period.
Plan cleaning and maintenance before handover
Request the floor manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for the chosen product. Agree routine removal of grit, the permitted cleaning agents and equipment, spill response and suitable protection under furniture. Keep the product and colour records so later repairs can be assessed.
ESD flooring has additional maintenance constraints. Polyflor’s ESD floorcare guidance, for example, warns that ordinary polish can affect conductive performance. Use the selected system’s approved maintenance regime rather than transferring a cleaning method from another floor.

Vinyl flooring questions
What is the difference between sheet vinyl and LVT?
Sheet vinyl comes in rolls, while LVT comes in tiles or planks. Both include different product specifications. Compare the room requirements, joint treatment, wear surface, installation method and maintenance documents before selecting either.
Can vinyl flooring be used in hospitals and clinics?
It can be considered for specified healthcare areas. The exact room use, cleaning regime, wheeled traffic and junction details need review. Specialist clinical, clean-room or ESD requirements must be confirmed for the selected product and system.
Does all sheet vinyl need heat-welded seams?
No single seam rule covers every vinyl product. Follow the product’s approved installation method and the project specification. If welded joints are required, confirm the matching welding materials and the correct procedure before installation.
Can vinyl be installed over existing ceramic tiles?
Do not assume it can. The existing surface needs assessment for soundness, moisture, contamination and floor height, and the chosen preparation and flooring manufacturers must permit the proposed build-up.
Is vinyl flooring suitable for a wet area?
Only a product and installation system suited to the actual wet use should be specified. Review slip-risk conditions, seams, edges, drains and cleaning. A water-resistant floor surface alone does not establish the suitability of the whole construction.
How long will installation take?
The programme depends on the area, removal work, substrate condition, preparation products, site access and selected adhesive and floor covering. Ask for a project-specific sequence and permitted use times rather than relying on a general installation promise.
What information should I send for a quotation?
Send the city, approximate area, room schedule, floor photos, drawings or BOQ, preferred finish and target date. Add any coved-skirting, acoustic, slip-resistance, ESD or consultant requirements.
